A really good shot of her in 1929 launching torpedo planes off her deck. She was evacuated and was scuttled by USS Phelps (DD-360). Another explosion started fires in the hanger and blew the forward elevator a foot above the flight deck. She was sunk shortly after the battle when sparks triggered an explosion from the cracked port avgas tanks.
Lady Lex participated in the first naval battle where the opposing forces never made visual contact with the other and was fought only by aircraft. USS Lexington (CV-2) converted from the hull of the battlecruiser Lexington. She was badly damaged by Japanese bombers and had to be scuttled by her escorts on February 27 1942. USS Langley (CV-1), Originally the collier USS Jupiter, she was converted to be the US's first aircraft carrier.
